Five envelopes, one move
A useful relocation budget is not a single total. Divide the move into envelopes that answer two questions: what is the money for, and when must it be available?
1. Departure
Include transport to Germany, baggage or freight, pet travel where relevant, document copies, and obligations that remain at your current home. If an employer reimburses something, record both the payment date and the expected reimbursement date.
2. The housing bridge
Count temporary accommodation, long-term first rent, the deposit schedule, viewing travel and any overlap. Check whether the quoted rent is cold rent or warm rent, which operating costs are included, and whether electricity or internet requires a separate contract.
3. Local movement
Price the route you will actually use—not only the best-known national fare. Consider the first journey from station or airport, transport to viewings and registrations, commute start times, bikes, occasional taxis and tickets for accompanying family members.
4. Making a home usable
List what the property truly includes. Bedding, lamps, kitchen basics, cleaning supplies, curtains and laundry access can create a sharp first-week cluster. Separate urgent items from purchases that can wait until income begins.
5. Daily life and reserve
Give groceries, meals out during setup, mobile service, personal care and small local mistakes their own allowance. Then keep a reserve apart from ordinary spending. A reserve is for uncertainty; it should not be quietly used to make an unrealistic grocery figure work.
Put each cost on a timeline
Create columns for before departure, arrival week, weeks two to four and stable monthly life. This catches the common mistake of comparing an upfront total with a monthly salary without asking whether the salary arrives in time.

- How long could temporary accommodation realistically be needed?
- Which transport route works at your actual work hours?
- What remains payable in the country you are leaving?
- Which purchases must happen immediately, and which can wait?
